DJ&A developed a Visitor Use Monitoring Strategy for British Columbia Parks (BC Parks) and conducted a pilot test in five high-visitation parks. DJ&A conducted a series of virtual meetings and workshops with BC Parks to develop sampling, staffing, scheduling, and logistics plans for onsite monitoring in the pilot parks. DJ&A developed detailed monitoring methods, instruments, and protocols for selected indicators and associated measures of visitor use volumes and patterns in each park. This included onsite visitor surveys of crowding perceptions, automated trail use and vehicle traffic counts, parking counts, and visitor use density counts at popular attractions. DJ&A designed and conducted virtual workshops to provide field team staff trainings and oversight throughout the peak summer visitor use season.
DJ&A analyzed study data, prepared reports for each of the pilot parks, and presented results to BC Parks staff in virtual workshops. Throughout the pilot project, DJ&A worked closely with BC Parks to ensure the onsite monitoring results would inform management recommendations to improve traffic and parking conditions, reduce crowding, and protect park resources.
